It has never been this good; Jumia CEO on online Shopping and loving his wife as a hobby

JUMIA MD SAM CHAPPATTE

Six years ago, Kenyas top e-commerce portal Jumia was birthed, a move that would eat into the traditional forms of shopping.

This has seen online shopping in the country go up 14 per cent since 2014 due to growing internet usage, according to the 2017 consumer connected study report from Google. The industry is now valued at about Sh4.3 billion

We took a moment to sit down with Jumia Kenya current managing director SAM CHAPPATTE who in a broad smile said, “ it has never been this good”.

So, how has it been for six years?

Notwithstanding the influx of online shopping platforms, Chappatte says fast delivery, comparative pricing, having enough stock and tightening the nod on product quality has made them stay ahead of the curve.

Recent findings by digital marketing research firm e-Ensures shows that Jumia and Kilimall are the most sought-after online shopping sites at 38 per cent and 22 per cent, respectively.

Today, unlike the other portals, Jumia has 2.2 million products for sale, delivers within a maximum of 5 days depending on location , has over 5000 vendors and boasts of cheap.

However, there is a rising usage of social media platforms like Facebook, Whatsapp and Instagram as alternative online market points contributing to at least 15 per cent of the shopping.

The research firm notes that online shopping in the country is largely driven by online advertisement, referrals and availability of products selling at crazy discounts

Today, unlike the other portals, Jumia has 2.2 million products for sale, delivers within a maximum of 5 days depending on location , has over 5000 vendors and boasts of cheap. This has seen Jumia creating over 20,000 jobs indirectly.

From the bottom of my heart…Chappatte during an interview

They intend to have about 5 million more products by end of the year and about 100 million products by 2024.

They have literally grown their vendor and product base 10 and 73 folds respectively in the last six years.

Who buys the products?

Kenya being a youthful country, those aged 25-34 years constitute of Jumia’s most frequent clients. They live in major cities and are young professionals.

According to Chappatte, non-perishable goods are the second most sought after products in the portal by volume, second to electronics- which mostly constitute of mobile phones.

Has it been easy?

While the online shopping craze is rising, it has not been all rosy, Trust and lack of knowledge on shopping online has remained the greatest challenge.

This has seen Jumia become the first online platform in the region to introduce an independent three month guarantee on any unsatisfactory products.

The Guarantee will cover products with Manufacturing Defects, Dead on Arrival, Counterfeit or Wrong Items delivered. It however excludes Consumer Goods, Beauty & Fashion items and low cost items below Sh1,500.

While the online shopping craze is rising, it has not been all rosy, Trust and lack of knowledge on shopping online has remained the greatest challenge.

While it will be free to customers & benefits vendors on the platform, selling conditions are expected to get stricter. Vendors will increasingly be barred or fined upto Sh25,000 if they sell sub-standard products on the platform.

So how does Chappatte unwind after putting in such effort ? Does he have a hobby?

He chuckles after I ask this question, but the answer got me thinking…mmmm !! thats nice.
Well, “ I love catching up with my wife,” he says.

Asides from that, he loves hiking ! And this makes him relax his nerves from the madness of running an e-commerce firm in Kenya!

That aside, coming Monday ( 16th July 2018 ) Jumia will kick off its anniversary! You don’t want to miss the party.
